Clinical significance:
- contribution to total hemoglobin increases with defects in hemoglobin beta-chain (beta-thalassemia)
Specimen:
1) hemolysate prepared from whole blood (EDTA, heparin, oxalate)
2) stable for 30 days at 4 degrees C
