Indication: - evaluation of hemoglobinopathy Normal range: 1.5-3.5% Clinical significance: - contribution to total hemoglobin increases with defects in hemoglobin beta-chain (beta-thalassemia) Increases: 1) beta thalassemia (trait: 3.7-7%) 2) drug-induced megaloblastic anemia 3) hemoglobinopathy (values in excess of 10%) a) hemoglobin C - hemoglobin SC (50%) b) hemoglobin E c) hemoglobin O Decreases: 1) untreated iron deficiency 2) erythroleukemia 3) hemoglobin H disease 4) delta-thalassemia Specimen: 1) hemolysate prepared from whole blood (EDTA, heparin, oxalate) 2) stable for 30 days at 4 degrees C
