hematologic malignancy (hematopoietic malignancy, hematologic cancer)
Etiology:
- alcohol may not be a risk factor
- may have protective effect
- relative risk: leukemia (0.51), multiple myeloma (0.52), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (0.65), Hodgkin's disease (0.71)
Genetics:
- see more specifc types
- chromosomal deletion involving UHRF2 is found in multiple kinds of malignancies
- implicated genes (not otherwise specified) ROPN1
Management:
- prophylactic platelet transfusion in patients with platelet counts <10,000/uL (<20,000/uL in febrile patients) [1]
Notes:
- patients with hematologic malignancies often receive aggressive end-of-life care [3]
