Etiology: - alcohol may not be a risk factor - may have protective effect - relative risk: leukemia (0.51), multiple myeloma (0.52), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (0.65), Hodgkin's disease (0.71) Genetics: - see more specifc types - chromosomal deletion involving UHRF2 is found in multiple kinds of malignancies - implicated genes (not otherwise specified) ROPN1 Management: - prophylactic platelet transfusion in patients with platelet counts <10,000/uL (<20,000/uL in febrile patients) [1] Notes: - patients with hematologic malignancies often receive aggressive end-of-life care [3]
