alar cartilage; major/greater cartilage; minor/lesser cartilage; accessory quadrate cartilage

The free & movable U-shpaed alar cartilages, dilate or constrict the nares when the muscles acting on the nose contract. Major (greater) alar cartilage: - consists of a medial & a lateral crus; these pair of cartilages form the tip of the nose. Minor (lesser/accessory quadrate) alar cartilage: - the 2-4 cartilagenous plates of the wing of the nose posterior to the greater cartilage.
