glutamine (NutreStore, Endari)

Pharmacology: Tradename: NutreStore Indications: 1) used to reduce severity of mucositis caused by chemotherapy 2) short-bowel syndrome 3) treatment of irritable bowel syndrome after GI infection [3] 4) treatment of sickle cell disease [2] Dosage: - 5-15 grams PO BID based on body weight - < 30 kg: 5 g/dose (10 g/day) - 30-65 kg: 10 g/dose (20 g/day) - > 65 kg: 15 g/dose (30 g/day) - mix in 8 oz (240 mL) of cold or room temperature beverage or 4-6 oz of food before ingestion Oral Powder: 5 grams/packet Adverse effects: - constipation, nausea, headache, cough, - abdominal pain, back pain, chest pain, & leg pain [2] Laboratory: - glutamine in specimen - glutamine in body fluid - glutamine in amniotic fluid - glutamine in vitreous fluid - glutamine in CSF - glutamine in blood - glutamine in serum/plasma - glutamine in urine Mechanism of action: 1) may diminish inflammation & prevent mucosal damage 2) amino-acid supplement (not an essential amino acid)
