gingivostomatitis
Etiology: Herpes simplex type 1
Clinical manifestations:
1) patient is generally young & appears ill
2) viral prodrome 24-48 hours prior to appearance of mucosal vesicles
3) vesicles rupture with coalescence into large, painful ulcers
4) associated gingivitis
5) white coating on tongue
6) regional lymphadenopathy
7) duration < 1 week
8) recurrent episodes take the form of Herpes simplex labialis
Laboratory:
1) acute & convalescent serology for HSV-1
2) cytology showing giant cells with viral inclusion bodies
Management:
1) symptomatic
2) systemic acyclovir
