Indications: - gastric cancer - partial gastrectomy for duodenal ulcer - gastric ulcer refractory to medical therapy Laboratory: - monitor serum vitamin B12 in patients who have had proximal or total gastrectomy Special laboratory: - lifelong surveillance with upper GI endoscopy for recurrence in patients with partial gastrectomy due to gastric cancer [2] Complications: 1) increased risk of pulmonary tuberculosis 2) increased risk of vitamin B12 deficiency 3) dumping syndrome 4) blind loop syndrome
