flatline protocol
Electrocardiogram registers a flat line.
Differential diagnosis:
1) batteries dead
2) monitor gain to low
3) monitor cable not connected to patient, 3-lead connector, or monitor
4) ventricular fibrillation with a sustained vector perpendicular to the monitor
Procedure:
1) check power to both defibrillator & monitor
2) check all connections
3) check gain or sensitivity
4) check setting for 'LEAD SELECT'
- check each of leads
5) if using 'quick-look' paddles, move paddles 90 degrees
a) move paddle at right upper sternal border to left upper sternal border
b) move paddle at left apex to right lower sternal border
6) if using adhesive pads
a) do NOT unstick them & rotate
b) connect 3 limb leads
