fibrous adhesion

An adhesion of fine strands of fibrin. Etiology: - surgical procedure - 80-90% of patients who undergo open abdominal or pelvic surgery [2] - less frequent after laparoscopic surgery than open surgery (~50%) [2] - hospital readmissions directly related to adhesions (1.7% for laparoscopy vs 4.3% for open surgery) [2] Pathology: - fibrin derived from exudate of plasma or lymph in contact with adhering tissue surfaces
