Function: 1) carrier protein 2) release fibroblast-binding factors from extracellular matrix storage, thus enhances mitogenic activity of FGFs 3) enhances FGF2 signaling during tissue repair, angiogenesis & in tumor growth 5) component of a complex with FGFBP1, FGF1 & FGF2 6) interacts with FGF1, FGF2, FGF7, FGF10, FGF22 & HSPG2 7) keratinocyte mitogen Compartment: secreted, peripheral membrane Expression: - expressed in the suprabasal region of epidermis, in hair follicles, basement membrane at the dermo-epidermal junction (occasionally extending into the basement membrane of dermal blood vessels), wounded skin - expressed in normal & wounded skin - up-regulated in epithelial cells after skin injury Pathology: - expression is significantly up-regulated in carcinogen- induced skin tumors, invasive squamous cell carcinomas, some colon cancer cell lines & tumors - colocalizes with HSPG2 in pericellular environment of squamous cell carcinomas
