Tradename: Fergon. (also see ferrous sulfate) 320 mg = about 60 mg elemental iron Indications: prevention & treatment of iron deficiency. Contraindications: hemolytic anemia pregnancy category: + safety in lactation: + Dosage: 1) 320-640 mg PO TID 2) NO benefit to > 60 mg (elemental iron) QD [2,3] 3) NO benefit to > 15 mg (elemental iron) QD in elderly [4] Tabs: 300, 320 325 mg. Elixir: 300 mg/5 mL. 5-10 mL TID Pharmacokinetics: 1) absorption may be better than ferrous sulfate 2) elimination in urine Adverse effects: - may be better tolerated than ferrous sulfate
