femur
The long bone of the thigh
Articulations:
- articulates with the hip bone proximally & the tibia & patella distally.
Development:
- the visibility of the center of ossification at the distal end of the femur just before birth shown in radiographs is used as:
- medical-legal evidence, that a newborn infant found dead was near full term & capable of living at birth*
* curious argument; near full term, ok, but having a distally ossified femur would seem neither a necessary nor sufficient condition to support life
