femoral neck

The short constricted portion of the femur adjacent to the femoral head, separating the greater trochanter from the femoral head. Physiology: - women with narrow femoral neck widths have proportionately thicker bone cortex but similar bone-mineral density measured DEXA than do women with wider femoral necks [2] Pathology: - women with wide femoral necks experience greater bone loss during early menopause [2] suggesting these women may be at higher risk of femoral neck fracture [2]
