Indications: - evaluation of fat malabsorption - diarrhea - steatorrhea Normal range: - < 5 g of fecal fat/day on 100 g/day dietary fat - < 7 g of fecal fat/day on 100-150 g/day dietary fat [1] Increases: - fat malabsorption - exocrine pancreatic insufficiency - pancreatitis - hepatobiliary insufficiency - choledocholithiasis (gallstones) - pancreatic cancer - primary sclerosing cholangitis - increased intestinal motility - short bowel syndrome - inflammatory bowel disease - celiac disease - abetalipoproteinemia - bacterial overgrowth - cystic fibrosis - Zollinger-Ellison syndrome - giardiasis - Graves' disease / hyperthyroidism - pharmaceutical agents - Orlistat - octreotide - lanreotide Specimen: - 72 hour stool collection with the patient on a diet of 100g fat/day
