ethanolamine oleate (Ethamolin, Neosclerol)
Tradenames: Ethamolin.
Indications:
- sclerosing agent used for treatment of bleeding esophageal varices
Dosage: adults:
1) 1.5-5 mL/varix
2) up to 20 mL total or 0.4 mg/kg
3) decrease dosage for patients with hepatic dysfunction
Injection: 5% (2 mL)
Adverse effects:
1) not common (1-10%)
- pleural effusion, esophageal ulcer, pyrexia, retrosternal pain, esophageal stricture, pneumonia
2) uncommon (< 1%)
- injection necrosis, acute renal failure, aspiration, anaphylaxis
