estramustine (Emcyt)

Tradenames: Emcyt, Indications: - palliative treatment of prostatic cancer Contraindications: 1) active thrombophlebitis 2) hypersensitivity to estramustine, estradiol or nitrogen mustard Dosage: Take on an empty stomach Avoid taking with milk Capsule: 140 mg Adverse effects: 1) common (> 10%) - diarrhea, nausea, decreased libido, breast tenderness, breast enlargement, edema, dyspnea, mild increases in liver function tests 2) less common (1-10%) - leg cramps, anorexia, flatulence, leukopenia, lethargy, thrombophlebitis, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, insomnia 3) uncommon (< 1%) - night sweats, pigment changes, hypercalcemia, tinnitus, hot flashes, depression, cardiac arrest Test interactions: increases serum K+ Mechanism of action: - estrogen [2]
