esophagitis
Etiology:
1) gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
2) infectious esophagitis
a) Candida albicans (most common)
b) cytomegalovirus (CMV)
c) Herpex simplex vitus (HSV)
d) immunosuppressed patients
3) medications (see medication-induced esophagitis)
4) eosinophilic esophagitis
5) Barrett esophagus
Clinical manifestations:
- odynophagia is the most common presentation
- oral candidiasis (thrush) suggests infectious esophagitis
- absence of oral lesions does not rule out esophageal candidiasis
Special laboratory:
- upper GI endoscopy with brush biopsy & cytology
Management:
- see specific etiology
