Mucosal membranous bridging across the esophageal lumen.
Etiology:
- iron-deficiency anemia
- Plummer-Vinson syndrome
Pathology:
- webbing of the mucosa at the junction of the hypopharynx & the esophagus
- irregular atrophy
Laboratory:
1) complete blood count
2) iron studies (serum iron, TIBC, serum ferritin)
Special laboratory:
- upper GI endoscopy, esophagoscopy
Management:
1) dilatation with large rubber bougies
2) excision with biopsy forceps during endoscopy
General
abnormal morphologic structure (malformation)
