Reference interval: - 4-27 mU/mL [4], 5-36 mU/mL [1] - < 19 mU/mL [3] Indications: - evaluation of hypoplastic anemia Contraindications: - routine measurement of serum erythropoietin in patients with chronic kidney disease* * not useful for determinining eleigibility for erythropoiesis-stimulating agent [3] Increases: 1) pure red cell aplasia 2) iron deficiency anemia 3) autonomous production - renal cell carcinoma [3,4] - hepatocellular carcinoma [3] - pheochromocytoma [3] 4) erythrocytosis (secondary polycythemia) 5) anabolic steroids Decreases: 1) chronic renal failure 2) polycythemia rubra vera 3) rheumatoid arthritis 4) human immune deficiency virus (HIV) infection - zidovudine can increase erythropoietin levels 6) amphotericin B serum levels are low, but not absent
