erythropoiesis
The formation of erythrocytes. The proerythroblast is the earliest cell programmed for the production & packaging of hemoglobin. The maturation process proceeds:
proerythroblast -> erythroblast -> normoblast -> reticulocyte -> erythrocyte
The maximal increase in erythrocyte production is about 10-fold.
