epithelial mesenchymal transdifferentiation; epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT)
Transition or differentiation of epithelial cells into mesenchymal cells.
Occurs:
1) during embryonic development
2) during progression of epithelial tumors
3) with hypoxia (renal tubules)
4) with peritoneal dialysis
Molecular induction by:
- TGF-beta angiotensin II [4]
May play a role in fibrosis (epithelial cell -> myofibroblast).
- chronic renal failure
- glomerulnephritis
- hypertension
