epiphysiodesis

Indications: - correction of leg length discrepancy - poliomyelitis - cerebral palsy - muscle atrophy - muscle spasticity - Legg-Perthes disease - bone fractures may stimulate excessive bone growth - birth defects (congenital deformities) of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, or ligaments Procedure: - removal of the epiphyseal plate (growth plate) of a bone, or - a cube containing part of the epiphyseal plate is rotated 90 degrees & reinserted
