Reference interval: - < 50-75 pg/mL (< 273-340 pmol/L) {supine} - < 75 ng/L (< 410 pmol/L) {supine} [2] Increases: - associated with neurochromaffin tumors - pheochromocytoma - paraganglioma - anxiety - intense physical exercise Decreases: - autonomic neuroapathies - diabetes mellitus - parkinsonism - orthostatic hypotension Specimen: 1) plasma (heparin or EDTA) 2) chill specimen immediately in ice water 3) separate plasma in refrigerated centrifuge within 30 minutes of collection 4) freeze immediately at -20 degrees C in plastic vials 5) stable for 8 months at -70 degrees C
