endometrial dysplasia/hyperplasia
Etiology:
- unopposed estrogen in women taking hormone replacement therapy increase risk
- tamoxifen increases endometrial hyperplasia
Clinical manifestations:
- abnormal uterine bleeding (most common presenting symptom)
Laboratory:
- endometrial biopsy for atypia
Special laboratory:
- pelvic ultrasound for endometrial thickness
Complications:
- endometrial carcinoma
- dysfunctional uterine bleeding
Management:
- endometrial hyperplasia without atypia responds well to progestins
- hysterectomy for women with atypia, unless contraindicated [2]
