Clinical significance: - allows air to escape from a pulmonary lobe but not enter it - induces a reduction in lobar volume that may improve lung function & exercise tolerance in patients with pulmonary hyperinflation related to advanced emphysema Complications: - increased risk of COPD exacerbations - increased risk of pneumonia - increased risk of hemoptysis - pneumothorax (18%) [2] Clinical trials: - modest improvements in lung function & exercise tolerance Notes: - Zephyr Valve approved June 2018
