Indications:
- atherosclerosis with arterial stenosis
- peripheral arterial disease (peripheral vascular disease)
- removal atheromatous plaque in the endothelial lining of any artery
- removal of arterial thrombosis that may complicate an atheroma
Procedure:
- the procedure separates the an atheromatous plaque from the endothelial arterial wall & removes it
Complications:
- embolism of plaque
Notes:
- 1st performed on a superficial femoral artery in 1946
