elastofibroma
Epidemiology:
- almost exclusively over age 50
- peak between 7th and 8th decades
- female predominance
- almost always located in connective tissue between lower scapula and chest wall, deep to latissimus dorsi and rhomboid major muscles, often attached to periosteum of ribs
- unilateral in most cases
Pathology:
- ill-defined
- size varies from 2 - 15 cm in diameter
Microscopic Pathology:
- paucicellular collagenous tissue
- large numbers of elastic fibers
- small amounts of mucoid stroma
- entrapped mature fat cells
Immunohistochemistry: elastin +
Clinical manifestations:
- slowly growing mass
- rarely pain or tenderness
Management: excision; local recurrence rare.
