egophony
A form of bronchophony in which the spoken syllables have a nasal quality.
Etiology:
- egophony is often the result of a compressed lung below a pleural effusion or pulmonary consolidation
Procedure:
- with your stethoscope, listen over symmetrical areas over the chest wall
- ask the patient to say 'ee'
Clinical manifestations:
- normally a muffled long E sound is heard
- when the E is heard as A with a nasal quality, egophony is present
