drug metabolism

Pharmaceutical agents (drugs) are cleared from the body by metabolism & elimination. Not all drugs are metabolized. Those that are metabolized are generally metabolized in the liver by phase 1 & phase 2 drug metabolizing enzymes. However, a few drugs are metabolized in plasma or the lungs. Elimination of metabolite(s) or the parent compound* is generally through the urine via the kidneys. The kinetics or rate of drug elimination is known as pharmacokinetics. * the drug itself in the case of a drug not metabolized
