Neurons using dopamine as a neurotransmitter are abundant in the mesencephalon of humans. These include neurons of the substantia nigra, other CNS nuclei & scattered nuclei. Dopaminergic neuron-containing regions/nuclei in the human mesencephalon include: 1) substantia nigra 2) paranigral nucleus 3) ventrolateral aspect of periaqueductal gray matter 4) interfascicular nucleus 5) caudal linear nucleus 5) rostral linear nucleus (ventral to oculomotor nucleus) 6) parabrachial pigmented nucleus
