The process in which interchain hydrogen bonds between two strands of DNA are broken or 'melted', generating a region of unpaired single strands. Notes: - Note that this term refers to a geometric change in DNA conformation and should not be confused with 'DNA topological change ; GO:0006265'.

Specific

DNA unwinding involved in DNA replication (GO:0006268) nucleotide-excision repair, DNA duplex unwinding (GO:0000717)
