digital subtraction angiography (DSA)

Angiobraphy with images produced by subtracting a pre-contrast image from images after contrast is introduced. Indications: - visualization of arterial & venous occlusions, including a) carotid artery stenosis b) pulmonary embolism c) acute limb ischemia d) renal artery stenosis - visualizing cerebral aneurysms & arteriovenous malformations (AVM) Clinical significance: - images obtained from standard angiography include all overlying structure besides the blood vessels - this is useful for determining anatomical position & but interferes with visualizing blood vessels - digital subtraction angiography subtracts background noise from the fluoroscopic images of the blood vessels
