dienestrol (DV cream, Cycladiene)

Indications: - symptomatic management of menopause symptoms - atrophic vaginitis - atrophy of vulva Dosage: - vaginal: 1) 1-2 applications/day for 2 weeks 2) 1 application/day for 2 additional weeks 3) maintenance: 1 application 1-3 times/week for 3 weeks each month Vaginal cream (with applicator): 0.01% (30 g) Pharmacokinetics: - topical vaginal application is associated with extensive absorption into the systemic circulation Adverse effects: 1) not common (1-10%) - anorexia, abdominal cramping, peripheral edema, breast tenderness, breast enlargement 2) uncommon (< 1%) - hypertension, thromboembolism, stroke, myocardial infarction, migraine, dizziness, anxiety, depression, headache, chloasma, melasma, rash, decreased glucose tolerance, alteration in menses flow, nausea, GI distress, increased triglycerides, increased LDL cholesterol, cholestatic jaundice, increased susceptibility to Candida infection
