dexamethasone/tobramycin (Tobradex)
Tobramycin/Dexamethasone.
Indications:
1) topical treatment of infection & inflammation due to E coli, H influenzae, M lacunata, Neisseria, Proteus, Pseudomonas, S aureus, S epidermidis, Serratia,
2) decrease inflammation & complicating bacterial infections associated with Herpes zoster
2) inflammation & infection associated with
- corneal abrasion
- corneal perforation [3]
Contraindications:
pregnancy-category C
safety in lactation ?
Dosage:
1) ointment: BID-QID
2) solution: 1 drop every 1-6 hours
Adverse effects:
1) increased lacrimation
2) itching
3) edema of the eyelids
4) conjunctival erythema
Mechanism of action:
1) binds bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit
2) inhibits bacterial protein synthesis
3) disrupts bacterial cell membrane
4) corticosteroid
