Etiology:
- central demyelination occurs within the central nervous system as in multiple sclerosis
- peripheral demyelination occurs in peripheral nerves as in Guillain-Barre syndrome
Pathology:
- loss of the myelin sheath with preservation of axons or nerve fiber tracts
