deleted in azoospermia-like (DAZ-like autosomal, deleted in azoospermia-like 1, DAZ homolog, SPGY-like-autosomal, DAZL, DAZH, DAZL, DAZLA, SPGYLA)

Function: 1) RNA-binding protein 2) essential for gametogenesi 3) role iin spermatogenesis 4) binds 3'UTR of mRNA & regulates translation of key transcripts (putative) 5) forms heterodimer with DAZ 6) interacts with BOLL, DAZAP1, DAZAP2, PUM2 - DAZ-like domain mediates interaction with DAZAP1, DAZAP2 Structure: - homodimer & heterodimer with DAZ - belongs to the RNP DAZ family - contains 1 DAZ-like domain contains 1 RRM domain (RNA recognition motif) Compartment: - cytoplasm, nucleus, predominantly cytoplasmic - nuclear in spermatogonia until near the end of meiotic prophase, cytoplasmic then onward Expression: testis specific Pathology: - defects in DAZL may be a cause of infertility due to oligozoospermia & non obstructive azoospermia
