Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet
Diet rich in fruits & vegetables, nonfat dairy products & very low salt.
Benefits:
1) strict adherence can lower blood pressure as much as pharmaceutical agent (single agent)
2) 8-14 mm Hg reduction in systolic blood pressure after 8 weeks
3) close adherence lowers risk of heart failure in women, hazzard ratio 0.6 [21]
4) may reduce risk of gout in men [24]
Recommendations:
1) increase fruits & vegetables to 8-11 servings/day
- 2 servings of fruit & 3 servings of vegetables associated with the lowest mortality [26]
2) increase servings of whole grain products
3) maintain 2-3 servings of dairy products/day
4) include nuts, seeds & dried beans to 4-5 times/week
5) limit servings of meat to < 6 ounces/day
6) limit servings of fat* to 3/day
* serving of fat is 1 tablespoon (15 mL) about 110 kcal
Total kcals = 1500
Protein = 23%
Fat = 18%
Carbohydrate= 59%
Notes:

- may have synergistic effects with Mediterranean diet (see MIND diet)
