Indications: - evaluation of bacterial overgrowth in the GI tract - short bowel syndrome (postpoperative bacterial overgrowth) Clinical significance: - D-lactate is - produced by intestinal flora - not metabolised by mammals; elimination via renal excretion Increases: - a sign of bacterial overgrowth in the GI tract - short bowel syndrome (postpoperative bacterial overgrowth) - increases uncommon in humans, common among ruminants - increased with short bowel syndrome
