Indications: - evaluation of prion disease - Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease Specimen: - CSF Clinical significance: - most sensitive & specific test for prion proteins in the CSF Method: - uses recombinant prion protein & thioflavin T fluorescence to detect small quantities of prion protein in CSF [1] - prion protein in the CSF induces the recombinant prion protein to change conformation & form fibrils that bind thioflavin T & begin to fluoresce
