Indications: - cerebral edema with increased intracranial pressure due to - *stroke - traumatic brain injury - intracranial neoplasm - osteomyelitis of the skull - bone neoplasm, osteosarcoma of the skull - intracranial access for other procedures - tractotomy for chronic pain - intracranial exploration &/or decompression Procedure: - removal of part of the skull - allows expansion of cerebral edema & relief of increased intracranial pressure - removes diseased bone Notes: - proceure is controversial
