Function: 1) sensory function in the distribution of innervation 2) central inhibitory effect on the sensation of breathlessness [3] Origin: - 2nd division of the trigeminal nerve (CN V-2) Branches: 1) meningeal branch 2) ganglionic branches to the pterygopalatine ganglion 3) zygomatic nerve a) zygomaticofacial nerve b) zygomaticotemporal nerve 4) posterior superior alveolar nerve 5) palatine nerves 6) posterior superior lateral nasal nerves 7) nasopalatine nerve 8) pharyngeal nerve 9) continues as the infraorbital nerve in the orbit a) anterior superior alveolar nerve b) middle superior alveolar nerve c) superior labial nerves d) inferior palpebral nerves e) external nasal nerve f) internal nasal nerve Afferents: - sensory fibers distributed to a) skin & conjunctiva of the lower eyelid b) skin & mucosa of the upper lip & cheek c) palate & roof of pharynx d) upper teeth & gingiva e) maxillary, ethmoidal & sphenoidal sinuses f) wings of the nose g) posterior/inferior nasal cavity Efferents: - secretory fibers from the pterygopalatine ganglion pass with the zygomatic & lacrimal nerves to the lacrimal gland Course: - passes anteriorly from the middle cranial fossa through the foramen rotundum into the pterygopalatine fossa
