coxitis; transient synovitis of the hip; postinfectious arthritis

inflammation of the hip Coxitis fugax is also known as transient synovitis Etiology: - any viral infection Clinical manifestations: - cases occur during or after an extraarticular viral infection - often follows a mild upper respiratory infection - pain in the hip, thigh, groin or knee on the affected side - afrebrile Laboratory: - complete blood count (CBC) - erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) generally normal Differential diagnosis: - reactive arthritis Management: - rest - non-weight bearing - analgesics (NSAIDS) as needed - recovery generally occurs within 6 weeks
