Etiology:
- often occur in association with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
Clinical manifestations:
recurrent behaviors beyond the normal range that the individual feels compelled to undertake:
1) rationale
a) to preserve personal safety
b) to avoid embarrassment
c) to perform adequately
d) to diminish anxiety or stress associated with obsessions [1]
2) behaviors
a) checking multiple times to see that the gas is turned off before leaving home
b) repeated hand washing
c) mentally repeating words or counting
