Etiology: 1) colon carcinoma is most common cause 2) volvulus 3) diverticulitis generally causes only partial obstruction 4) inflammatory bowel disease 5) benign tumors 6) fecal impactation 7) barium impactation 8) Hirschsprung's disease Clinical manifestations: 1) see intestinal obstruction 2) vomiting is rare Laboratory: 1) see intestinal obstruction 2) colonoscopy if diagnosis is in doubt & abdomen is non-surgical Management: 1) see intestinal obstruction 2) endoscopy a) dilation & decompression b) laser fulguration c) detorsion of volvulus
