Matter in a state of dispersion. The particles are larger than crystalloid particles but too small to precipitate under the influence of gravity. Size ranges from 0.1 to 1.0 microns. Contrast with crystalloid. Pharmacology: - all currently classified plasma volume expanders are colloids
