codeine/promethazine (Phenergan with codeine)

DEA-controlled substance: class 5. Indications: - temporary relief of coughs & upper respiratory tract symptoms associated with allergy or the common cold Contraindications: 1) concurrent use of MAO inhibitors 2) increased intracranial pressure 3) depressed ventilation Dosage: 1) adults & children > 12 years of age: -> 5-10 mL every 4-6 hours PRN (10-20 mg of codeine/dose) 2) children 6-12 years: 2.5-5 mL every 4-6 hours PRN (5-10 mg of codeine/dose) 3) children 2-6 years: 1.25-2.5 mL every 4-6 hours PRN (2.5-5 mg of codeine/dose) Syrup: promethazine HCl 6.25 mg & codeine phosphate 10 mg/5 mL (120 mL, 240 mL) Adverse effects: see promethazine & codeine
