Etiology: 1) spontaneous (20%) 2) exposure to bovine factor V present in topical thrombin or 'surgical glue' used in surgical procedures (80%) Epidemiology: uncommon Pathology: 1) heterologous antibodies to bovine factor V cross-react with human factor V 2) serious, even fatal bleeding may occur Laboratory: - prolongation of PT & aPTT; neither corrects with addition of normal plasma
