coagulase-negative Staphylococcus

Staphylococcus spp other than Staphylococcus aureus Clinical significance: - coagulase-negative Staphylococci are generally non-pathogenic organisms Laboratory: - coagulase test is negative* - Staphylococcus coagulase negative DNA * Staphylococcus aureus distinguished from other Staphylococci by the production of coagulase (coagulase test) Management: - stop IV antibiotics for coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteremia if single positive culture with no metastatic or catheter site infection or indwelling prosthetic devices [2] - 5 days of IV antibiotics for coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteremia with positive blood cultures 2 days apart - 7-28 days of IV antibiotics for complicated coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteremia - daptomycin/vancomycin (for methicillin-resistant infection) - anti-staphylococcal penicillin or cefazolin for methicillin-sensitive infection
