Origin:
1) sensory fibers from the trigeminal ganglion
2) motor root of the trigeminal nerve
3) formed in the foramen ovale
Branches:
1) meningeal nerve
2) masseteric nerve
3) deep temporal nerve
4) pterygoid nerve (medial & lateral branches)
5) buccal nerve
6) auriculotemporal nerve
7) lingual nerve
8) inferior alveolar nerve
a) inferior dental nerves
b) mental nerve
c) incisive nerve
d) nerve to mylohyoid
Afferents:
- sensory fibers distributed to
a) auricle
b) external acoustic meatus
c) tympanic membrane
d) temporal region
e) cheek
f) skin overlying the mandible (EXCEPT the angle)
g) anterior 2/3 of the tongue
h) floor of the mouth
i) lower teeth & gingiva
Efferents:
- motor fibers
a) all of the muscles of mastication
b) mylohyoid
c) anterior belly of the digastric
d) tensor veli palatini
e) tensor tympani
Course:
- passes inferiorly from the middle cranial fossa through the foramen ovale into the infratemporal fossa
