Pathology: - congenital fissure or cleft in the middle or median line of the palate, often associated with cleft lip - cleft palate often occurs as a feature of a syndrome Complications: - cleft palate is linked to increased mortality & morbidity [2] compared with the unaffected population* - increased risk for death (RR=3.4) - increased risk for intellectual disability (RR=11.5) - increased risk for anxiety disorders (RR=2.9) - increased risk for autism spectrum disorder (RR=6.6) - increased risk for severe learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, musculoskeletal disorders * cleft lip is not linked to increased mortality & morbidity Management: - palatoplasty
